Bali or Lombok? How to choose the right island for your trip

Updated · 5 min read · By the Tour Pulau team

Sunrise over misty hills and calm water

In short: Choose Bali for temples, rice terraces, culture, food and plenty to do close together; choose Lombok for quieter white-sand beaches, waterfalls, Sasak villages, the Gili Islands and Mount Rinjani. With a week or more, you can combine both: they're about a 30-minute flight or a 1.5–2.5-hour fast boat apart.

Bali and Lombok sit side by side, but a day on each feels completely different. Here's how they compare, so you can choose — or decide to see both.

Choose Bali if…

  • It's your first time in Indonesia and you want lots to see in a short trip
  • You love temples, dance, markets and food
  • You're planning a group trip or event and need choice of hotels and venues

Choose Lombok if…

  • You want long, empty beaches and a slower pace
  • You'd like to snorkel with turtles around the Gili Islands
  • You're keen on hiking — Mount Rinjani is open from about April to December

Or do both

With seven days or more, a popular plan is Bali first for culture, then Lombok or the Gilis to slow down. Fast boats leave from Padang Bai, Serangan and Sanur, and flights between the two islands take about 30 minutes — see how to get from Bali to the Gilis and Lombok.
